Press Statement
Khaled Khoja
President of the Syrian Coalition
March 12, 2015
Following the release of the “Failing Syria” report by 21 human rights and aid agencies, President of the Syrian Coalition said:
“The report showcases the harsh reality that the international community has failed to rise to the biggest humanitarian challenge in a century. It has failed the Syrian people once again in the year 2014 by not being able to take concerted concrete action to put an end to atrocities taking place in Syria.
“The report also shows how that failure has caused unimaginable suffering to the Syrian people, with no fewer than 76,000 killed only last year. The combination of increasing humanitarian needs due to the continued violence, decreasing funds to aid agencies, and continued regime non-compliance with UNSC resolutions demanding aid access, have substantially derailed humanitarian response during 2014, with no signs of improvement in 2015.
“The Russian veto over the past four years has deadlocked the UN Security Council and prevented any attempt at serious action with enforceable measures. That has to stop. It has to stop immediately for the sake of the Syrian people, but also for the sake of other peoples who will suffer the deadly consequences of a weak ineffective international system.”
