The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) welcomes the affirmation by the G7 countries of their commitment to political solution in Syria; pushing for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254; and linking any contribution to reconstruction to political transition. This position needs to be followed by practical steps.
In view of the year-long deadlock at the UN Security Council with regard to Syria, the SOC calls on the G7 countries to support establishing practical mechanisms for the full implementation of UN Resolution 2254, especially the formation of a Transitional Governing Body (TGB), which is the core of a political transition in Syria. The free world cannot remain submissive to the Russian position seeking to support tyranny and criminality in Syria and elsewhere, nor to Russia’s policy of encouraging oppression of the people with iron and fire, and killing the hopes of millions for freedom and justice in their countries.
Addressing geopolitical issues that threaten to undermine democracy, freedom and human rights is of paramount importance. It is the duty of democratic countries to defend these values against the Russia-led authoritarian alliance and against other authoritarian and regimes such as Iran, North Korea and the Assad regime.
The emphasis by the G7 summit in their final communique on the unfettered humanitarian access is also very important, along with their support for renewal of the UN mandate for the swift cross-border aid delivery.
The SOC renews its commitment to UN Security Council resolutions and political solution as it calls for exerting the necessary pressure to bring about political transition that is key to restoration of stability in Syria and the region.
