As the world marls the Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare, and more than six years after the Assad regime’s major crime using chemical weapons against the Syrian people, in addition to the endless litany of crimes using various types of weapons, the peoples around the world are stilling awaiting for the perpetrators of these crimes to be brought to justice. Those criminals have violated international law, committed crimes against humanity, and have used chemical weapons hundreds of times since 2011 in violation of all international resolutions, norms, and conventions.
On this day dedicated to commemorating the victims of chemical weapons, the Syrian National Coalition reminds the international community of its responsibilities with regards to the crimes being committed in Syria. We stress the need to respect international resolutions primarily by the parties that issued them through the implementation of punitive measures against perpetrators of violations and abuses that have been documented and investigated by international institutions. These investigations have confirmed the responsibility of the Assad regime forces for the use of chemical weapons on many occasions.
The importance of commemorations should not be limited to its role in educating people on the most important issues, but should remind the international community of its responsibilities. This day is a reminder of the disgrace on the forehead of the international community, the UN Security Council, and major international actors.
The latest developments on the ground and the daily crimes being committed against the Syrian people by the Assad regime, the Russian occupation forces, Iranian militias, and what remained of the various terrorist organizations in Syria confirm the urgent need to find an international mechanism to end the suffering of the Syrian people. They also undermine the need to uphold international law through the referral of Assad’s crimes to the International Criminal Court to ensure that those responsible for war crimes, mass forced displacement, and torture, as well as perpetrators of chemical weapons crimes, are held account.
May our wounded recover, our detainees be free, and our fallen heroes rest in peace.
Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.
