The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) renews its support for the people of Dara’a as it commends their steadfastness and reaffirms its support for whatever decision they agree upon. The international community is required to assume its responsibilities with regard to civilians in Dara’a and the plight they are going through.
The assault by the Assad regime forces and sectarian militias on Dara’a requires an urgent international response and a clear stance from the guarantor states that reaffirms their commitment to implementing these agreements.
Major states in the UN Security Council must exert direct pressure to stop the regime’s assault on Dara’a; prevent the displacement of people of the city; lift the blockade; and eliminate the constant threat to civilians.
The Assad regime’s current escalation and attempts to forcibly displace the people of Dara’a coincide with the total farces that Russia and the regime are carrying out in the form of conferences and meetings on the return of refugees.
The situation on the ground lay bare the ongoing criminal intentions of seeking to empty Dara’a of its people; force out all activists and resistance fighters; and leave the country an open space for occupation, corruption, terrorism and tyranny.
A decisive international action must be taken to deter the murderous Assad regime from continuing with its crimes and mass forced displacement; put the political process back on track; and support the political transition in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council resolutions 2118 and 2254 and in accordance with UN General Assembly resolution 67/262 calling for the formation of a transitional governing body with full powers.
