The bloody attack that the Russian air force carried out in Idlib province on Thursday would not have occurred had the international community assumed its responsibilities. The attack killed five civilians from one family, including three children, when a Russian jet targeted a poultry farm in rural Idlib.
Russia’s crimes have not stopped over the past years, but have kept recurring. Terrorism, mass displacement and massacres have been used as a weapon to undermine political solution, confront the aspirations of the Syrian people, and impose a criminal regime on Syria, the region and beyond.
The Assad regime and Russia do not believe in any solution in Syria other than terrorism and military repression.
These crimes against the Syrian people must stop once and for all. The parties that do not assume their responsibilities and duties towards stopping these crimes and implementing UN resolutions risk becoming a partner in crime and disruption.
The international community’s lukewarm positions towards the crimes of the Russian and Iranian occupation and the Assad regime are shameful and reprehensible. They represents a direct partnership in the atrocities that the Syrian people have been subjected to for over a decade.
We renew our call for a strict mechanism through which all parties assume their responsibilities and in which sanctions are combined with practical measures with a specific time frame that ensures an end to bombing, massacres and crimes. Such mechanism must also ensure accountability for war criminals, chief among them is Bashar al-Assad, an end to the suffering of tens of thousands of detainees in the Assad regime’s prisons, the safe return of refugees and IDPs, and implementing all UN resolutions.
