The use of the veto by Russia and China to block a new draft UN Security Council resolution on the cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid is a criminal, irresponsible act.
The role of the Russian occupation in disrupting the UN has significantly contributed to the aggravation of the disaster. This investment in the tragedies of the Syrian people has reached blatant levels. It is organized political terrorism that occurs right before member states of the UN Security Council time and again.
The international community must assume its responsibilities with regard to what is going on. We cannot expect the regime and its allies to act against themselves, but we expect the international parties that safeguard peace and support democracy and freedom to commit to their principles and exercise their role in supporting the rights of the peoples and put an end to the humanitarian catastrophe that has been going on for years.
Institutions working on the issue of relief aid file know the risks of stopping the delivery of aid and the possible catastrophic consequences should that aid is restricted to the crossings that are under the control of the Assad regime.
The international community must not continue to play its inept role in this travesty which is taking place at the UN Security Council time and again and which each time ends with a new Russian veto.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition calls for the establishment of an international mechanism outside the UN Security Council that allows the delivery of humanitarian aid in a balanced, transparent manner. Humanitarian aid needs to reach those in real need. Action also needs to be taken to bring an end to the ongoing crime against the Syrian people and hold accountable perpetrators of crimes against humanity, war crimes and terrorism in Syrian.
