The convening of the Brussels V Conference on ‘Supporting the future of Syria and the region’ is of exceptional importance in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and the passage of 10 years of the brutal war that the Assad regime has waged against the Syrian people.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stresses the need to step up international support for Syria beyond the fulfilling of pledges to ensure that aid reaches those who deserve it at home and abroad. Increased support is also needed for host countries and societies facing difficult circumstances.
These conferences need to play a pivotal role in renewing international commitment to political transition; building up momentum for the political process; and forcing the obstructing party to comply with international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
International pressure is also needed to revitalize the political process and bring it back on track; ensure that the Syrian people regain their legitimate rights to freedom, justice and democracy; and open the door to the return of refugees and IDPs to their homes.
