On the Day of Remembrance of All Victims of the Chemical War, the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) stresses that the Syrian people suffer from a lack of seriousness in the international stances in putting an end to the crimes committed against them. The Assad regime still rules Syria and kills, arrests, tortures and bombs the Syrian people without any deterrence. It suffocated thousands of Syrian civilians in chemical attacks, of whom human rights groups were able to document 1,510 in various Syrian governorates.
The international community must stand firmly in the face of the Assad regime, which is killing the Syrian people in various ways. It used chemical weapons against the Syrian people 217 times, killing at least 1,510 Syrians, including 205 children and 260 women, and injuring 12,000 others, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights. It committed all these crimes in front of the eyes of the world and with international human rights assurances and hundreds of testimonies from survivors that the Assad regime is responsible for the attacks.
The Assad regime did not commit crimes and kill civilians only, but also obstructed the work of international inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. It continues to pursue a criminal policy towards the Syrians, rejecting and not submitting to a political solution due to the absence of the necessary international pressures to do so.
The SOC warns that the impunity for the Assad regime and its allies will not discourage the Syrian people from their demands for freedom and dignity. It calls on the international community and the United Nations to assume their responsibilities, ensure accountability, and implement international resolutions on Syria, especially resolutions 2118 and 2254, so as to achieve a political transition that enables the Syrian people to build a new state in which there is no place for the Assad regime.
