On the occasion of the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) affirms the right of Syrian children, as well as all children everywhere in the world, to live in safety and peace. The number of Syrian child victims has exceeded tens of thousands as a result of the attacks launched by the Assad regime over a period of thirteen years, during which Syrian children experienced complex suffering as a result of killing, arrest, displacement, and besiegement, in addition to being deprived of their most basic rights to life, education, health, food, and shelter.
The SOC emphasizes the continuation of the tragedy for the Syrian people, and children in particular, due to the weak humanitarian response and the failure to meet the necessary needs to mitigate the repercussions of more than a decade of severe humanitarian crises. This situation has been exacerbated by the Assad regime’s obstruction of the political process and its rejection of a political solution.
The international inaction in Syria and the absence of international will to resolve the Syrian crisis have led to deepening humanitarian crises and created dire living conditions in Syria, which have tragic repercussions on the general Syrian people, especially children. Therefore, the SOC stresses the urgent necessity for the international community to do its part and shoulder its responsibility to find a way out of the political deadlock and push towards implementing a political solution in Syria in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2254 (2015) and 2118 (2013). This is essential so that the Syrian people can begin to heal their wounds and work to address the repercussions of the immense crises, aiming to reach a bright future for Syrians in general, and for children in particular, and to build a state of security, peace, and justice, based on the foundations of democracy, freedom, decent living, and equal citizenship.
