The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) welcomes the joint statement on the ministerial meeting on Syria, stressing the importance of the points related to the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 2254. It especially welcomes the calls for supporting a ceasefire; stopping the ongoing attacks and crimes against civilians; ensuring unfettered, safe humanitarian access; and reaffirmation of commitment to the unity of Syria and its territorial integrity.
The SOC reiterates that these statements and other resolutions on Syria can only be implemented through real international mechanisms in parallel with seeking accountability for the war crimes that the Assad regime have been committing for nearly ten years, especially its use of chemical weapons which was proven by multiple international reports.
The SOC stresses the need to ensure a ceasefire, protect civilians, lift the blockade recently imposed on Daraa al-Balad, and prevent any new mass displacement. It also stresses the need to renew the UN resolution on the delivery of humanitarian aid via the border crossings that are outside the control of the murderous regime and its corrupt gangs.
We stress the need to establish an international mechanism that imposes a political transition in Syria in line with UN Resolution 2254. Political transition is the only solution that can put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people, ensure their security, meet their aspirations, ensure their return, and restore hope to the Syrian people. It will also ensure restoration of stability and bring peace after the Assad regime has been overthrown and the withdrawal of the sectarian terrorist militias that it brought to the country.
