The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) condemns the violent shelling launched by the Assad regime on the town of Kanaker in the Damascus countryside, which targeted civilian homes and resulted in the death of five civilians and the injury of many others. This attack is a continuation of the regime’s criminal behavior in its dealings with the Syrian people.
The SOC urges the international community not to remain silent about the crimes and violations committed by the Assad regime, as it continues its atrocities against civilians. The most recent crime includes the bombing of Kanaker with artillery and heavy machine guns, prompted by the town’s objections to the regime’s arrest of its residents.
The SOC emphasizes that the Assad regime has not changed its behavior or criminal approach since it began killing, arresting, and disappearing Syrians at the start of the Syrian revolution in 2011. The SOC asserts that Syria under the Assad regime is unsafe and unsuitable for the return of refugees and displaced people. The sustainable solution in Syria is a political resolution in accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions 2254 (2015) and 2118 (2013), implemented firmly and justly to fulfill the demands of the Syrian people, who have made immense sacrifices for freedom, democracy, and justice.
