We are living in a world whose countries are racing to take care of the interests of their citizens, provide them with the best educational opportunities, and spend profusely on schools, universities and scientific research. Nonetheless, it is unfortunate that there is still an urgent need to dedicate a day to protecting education from attacks as there are regimes and authorities that continue to target, bomb and destroy schools systematically and deliberately.
On the International Day for the Protection of Education from Attacks, which falls on the September 9 of every year, nearly three million Syrian children are deprived of education, and one out of three schools is out of service.
None of the elements of the educational process were spared the criminal attacks of the Assad regime and its backers. The Assad regime is displacing students, arresting teachers, destroying schools, and distorting the school curricula.
On this day, we reiterate the calls and cries of the Syrian people who are being besieged, displaced, targeted with iron and fire, and subjected to various types of pressure in all parts of Syria. We demand an urgent intervention to save the Syrian people in accordance with international law and and to stop this crime that has been ongoing against the Syrian people for decades, especially in the past ten years.
It is imperative to implement UN resolutions; put an end to the crimes of the regime and its allies against the Syrian people; ensure a political transition in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012; and secure the safe and voluntary return of refugees in order to build what has been destroyed by ignorance and tyranny.
