The joint statement by the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States came to support the Syrian people, civil society organizations and the forces of the Syrian revolution and opposition. It reaffirmed its outright rejection of the sham elections that the Assad regime is carrying out in the areas under its control as it stressed that these elections will neither be free nor fair.
The quint statement stressed that elections cannot take place outside the framework described in UN Security Council Resolution 2254, adding that these elections should be convened under UN supervision to the highest international standards of transparency and accountability and that all Syrians should be allowed to participate in a safe and neutral environment.
The Syrian people are expecting more effective steps on the part of these states in line with their major and supportive role of peoples’ rights and democracy, and in line with their international responsibilities towards maintaining international peace and security. More effective steps need also to be taken towards the accountability of war criminals and perpetrators of chemical crimes, while contributing significantly and within a specific timeframe to reaching a political transition in Syria in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions so as to put an end to the regime’s and its backers’ war against the Syrian people and lay the groundwork for a democratic, civil state.
The Syrian people expect from all free states around the world and all other organizations, activists, and defenders of humanity and peoples’ rights to condemn the Assad regime’s crimes, especially the fraudulent process that it is carrying out now, while working to support the aspirations and struggle of the Syrian people for freedom and achieving the goals of their revolution.
