On World Refugee Day, the Syrian Opposition Coalition calls on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities with regards to the worsening humanitarian, economic and political catastrophe in Syria. It stresses that any further delay in assuming these responsibilities will only make the situation worse.
We have warned on many occasions of the dangers of the continuation of the humanitarian catastrophe affecting Syrian refugees, as well as of the consequences that could result from this catastrophe in the medium and long term. We reiterate the need for all governments and parties to respect international laws and treaties on the protection of refugees, and to prevent any violations against them.
The mass forced displacement that the Assad regime planned and executed with the support of the Russian and Iranian occupation forces and their allied terrorist militias is part of the bigger crime that the Assad regime began on the first day: “Assad or we burn the country.” The regime is carrying on with this crime which affects not only Syrians, but the whole world.
The various international efforts aimed at addressing the crisis did not live up to the required level, neither in terms of confronting the disaster and its consequences, providing assistance to refugees, displaced and affected people, nor in terms of preventing its continuation and punishing those responsible.
The Syrian people highly appreciate the friendly and sisterly countries that are hosting Syrian refugees and providing them with assistance.
Finally, we reiterate that a political solution that is based on UN resolutions is the only natural path that carries real hope to resolve the crises and disasters that the Syrian people are going through, including the IDP and refugee crisis, which continues to threaten the present and future of the peoples of the region and the world.
