The latest statements by the Russian President’s special envoy to Syria are an unacceptable interference in the Syrian people’s choices and the course of the political process.
The Syrian people began a revolution that is unparalleled in modern history, facing the most brutal regimes and terrorist organizations in the process. They will not accept any attempts by anyone to dictate choices on them or to set political or constitutional guidelines for Syria’s future.
Russia is striving in vain to present itself as an impartial mediator. The blood of tens of thousands of innocent civilians and the suffering of millions of displaced persons bear witness to the continued criminality of Russia, the Assad regime and Iran. Moreover, Russia frequently brags about testing hundreds of new types of weapons in its war against the Syrian people.
The constitutional track is just one of the tracks laid out in UN resolution 2254. The rest of the tracks must be opened, especially the track of the formation of a Transitional Governing Body with full executive powers. This is the responsibility of the UN Secretary-General and the major players in the international community.
For the Syrian people, the Assad regime, with its head and symbols, has long become history. It does not have any place whatsoever in the future of Syria for which the Syrian people are making tremendous sacrifices
We affirm our outright rejection of these irresponsible statements which constitute a repudiation of the political process and the course of the constitutional committee in particular. We call for a clear international position regarding this Russian absurdity that threatens the political process in its entirety.
The position of the Syrian people is more than clear regarding the necessity of holding war criminals accountable, chief among them is the head of the Assad regime. Those who fantasize about the war criminal Assad staying in power or playing a role in the future of Syria must give up this delusion.
