The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) reiterates that the international community possess the necessary legal and legitimate mechanism to confront Russia’s obstructionism; take action against the Assad regime under Chapter VII of the UN Charter; and employ this mechanism to impose a political solution on the Assad regime which does not comply without pressure.
The Russian-Chinese blocking of a joint declaration by the UN Security Council on Wednesday confirmed the Council’s impotence and laid bare a clear flaw in its working mechanisms. It also carried a clear message that decision makers must grasp: a political solution is not an option for the Assad regime and its allies in whatsoever, and that wasting time is the regime’s ultimate goal.
The UN Security Council is unable to issue a mere statement supporting the report which was submitted by the UN envoy Geir Pedersen despite its benign language and stopping short of calling things by their names. This inaction raises serious doubts about the possibility of taking practical steps through the UN Security Council to support a real political solution,
It is no longer acceptable to leave this issue a hostage to parties who are partners in crime and who live in a parallel world in search of illusions based on spreading chaos and mayhem.
