The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) welcomes the recent passage of the Assad Anti-Normalization Act by the US House of Representatives, marking a significant milestone in the global effort to take a decisive stance against the Assad regime’s atrocities. The Act, aimed at curbing normalization with a regime responsible for egregious war crimes against the Syrian people, signifies a crucial step towards revitalizing the political process and upholding UN resolutions on Syria.
Despite attempts at normalization, the Assad regime has persisted in its criminal behavior, perpetrating further violations against innocent civilians and posing a heightened threat to regional and international security. Its support for terrorism and illicit drug trafficking, exemplified by the exportation of Captagon to neighboring countries and beyond, underscores the urgent need for continued international pressure.
The SOC expresses hope for swift approval of the bill by the US Senate and subsequent endorsement by the President of the United States, emphasizing the necessity for its prompt implementation to effectively achieve its objectives.
Acknowledging the dedication of the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate in championing the cause of the Syrian people, the SOC extends gratitude to the American Coalition for Syria and other contributing entities for their collaborative efforts. It emphasizes that the legislation has been crafted with careful consideration to safeguard humanitarian aid and essential provisions crucial for the welfare of Syrian civilians.
The passage and enforcement of the Assad Anti-Normalization Act are perceived as a significant victory for the Syrian people, who have long awaited justice and the realization of their legitimate aspirations. The SOC asserts the imperative of continuing to confront the Assad regime through all legitimate means until accountability is achieved and Security Council resolutions, notably Resolutions 2118 (2013) and 2254 (2015), are fully and rigorously implemented.
Furthermore, the SOC calls for unified international action to ensure justice for Syrian victims and to hold perpetrators of crimes against humanity accountable before international courts.
