The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) deeply grieves the loss of Sheikh Muhammad Mamdouh Junaid, a renowned Syrian scholar and educator, who passed away today (Tuesday, June 20) in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
Sheikh Junaid made significant religious contributions during his tenure as a member of the Syrian Islamic Council and as the chairperson of the Association of Syrian Scholars. He served as a scholarly and social reference for Syrians residing in Medina, and his unwavering support for the Syrian revolution since its inception earned him great respect.
Hailing from a distinguished family renowned for their knowledge and fatwas in the Syrian province of Homs, Sheikh Junaid was born in 1940. He graduated from the Faculty of Sharia at the University of Damascus and delivered Friday sermons in various mosques in Homs since 1960. He also held the position of imam in multiple mosques, taught in mosques and high schools, and contributed to Sharia institutes in Homs since 1963.
The SOC extends its heartfelt condolences to Sheikh Junaid’s family, his admirers, and his students. May Allah bestow His mercy and forgiveness upon him and grant him the highest place in Paradise.
Surely we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return
