The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) deeply mourns the passing of renowned Syrian writer and novelist, Khaled Khalifa. Mr. Khalifa, aged 59, suffered a fatal heart attack in Damascus on Monday.
Born in Aleppo province, Mr. Khalifa earned a law degree from its university. Throughout his life, he was known for his unwavering commitment to the Syrian cause, standing in staunch opposition to the Assad regime. He championed the rights of the Syrian people in their pursuit of freedom and justice since the outset of the 2011 Revolution. On multiple occasions, he emphasized the irreplaceable nature of the Syrian revolution in the face of injustice and tyranny. He endured attacks by the security agencies of the Assad regime, resulting in fractures in his hand.
Khaled Khalifa made profound contributions to Syrian literature and culture with a portfolio of distinguished creative works. His novels have been translated into numerous languages worldwide, including “The Gypsies’ Notebooks,” “Praise of Hatred,” “No Knives in the Kitchens of This City,” and “Death is Hard Work (2016).” Additionally, Mr. Khalifa extended his talents to television drama series, documentaries, short films, and feature films.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Khalifa’s family, relatives, friends, and admirers. We pray for God Almighty to grant them patience and solace during this difficult time, and may the deceased find eternal mercy and forgiveness.
