The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) mourns the passing of the esteemed writer and veteran political dissident, Issam Al-Attar, who passed away today in the German city of Aachen at the age of 97. For more than half a century, he endured exile due to his steadfast resistance against tyranny, his unwavering opposition to the Assad regime, and his tireless pursuit of freedom in Syria.
Born in Damascus, Al-Attar bore witness to pivotal moments in Syria’s modern history, his principled stances shaping various chapters of the nation’s political landscape. He leaves behind a profound legacy and an extraordinary journey, emerging as a symbolic figure in the struggle against injustice and oppression. Rejecting violence, he championed peaceful resistance. Al-Attar previously held the position of General Controller of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria.
Following the Baath Party’s seizure of power and subsequent coup, Al-Attar was forced into exile from Syria in 1963 after departing for Hajj, prevented from returning thereafter. Despite residing abroad, the Assad regime relentlessly pursued him, even attempting his assassination, and tragically succeeding in taking the life of his wife, Banan al-Tantawi, in Aachen, Germany, in 1981.
Throughout his life, Al-Attar ardently supported the causes of freedom and justice in Syria, advocating for human rights and dignity at every opportunity. His existence was dedicated to combating injustice and tyranny in the pursuit of freedom. At the onset of the Syrian revolution in 2011, he stood as one of its earliest champions, dedicating substantial efforts to rallying support for the cause.
Today, Al-Attar departs us away from his homeland, his aspirations for Syria’s freedom and independence unfulfilled. He leaves behind a lifetime of counsel and calls for unity and collaboration in righteousness and piety, advocating fervently for freedom, dignity, justice, and progress, confronting life’s trials with integrity, wisdom, and sincerity.
May mercy be upon the esteemed writer and political dissident, Issam Al-Attar. Our deepest condolences extend to his family, friends, admirers, and the entirety of the Syrian people.
To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.
