The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) reaffirms its outright rejection of any elections involving Bashar al-Assad or any of those involved in war crimes or crimes against humanity in Syria.. It emphasizes it will not recognize any travesty of elections that will take place in Syria.
The SOC stresses that elections in Syria must take place in accordance with principles of political transition based on the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council resolutions 2118 and 2254, as well as in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution 262/67 calling for the formation of a Transitional Governing Body that enjoys the powers of the government and the presidency.
Based on response by revolutionary and national forces to the recent decision to form the National Commission for Elections, and in order to respect the views of the Syrian people and preserve the unity of their ranks, and based on the provisions of the SOCâs statute, and following a thorough review; the SOC decided to
Suspend the decision to form the National Commission for Elections until further consultations with the revolutionary and political forces are held to reach an appropriate formula.
