Press Release
Syrian Coalition
May 23, 2014
President of the Syrian Coalition Ahmad al-Jarba condemns in the strongest terms the veto by Russia and China against the United Nations Security Council resolution on the referral of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by the Assad regime to the International Criminal Court. The Coalition calls on Russia and China to stop supporting the criminal regime by blocking international action to prevent impunity in Syria. The Assad regime is guilty of horrific mass killings that it must be held accountable for.
President al-Jarba said: “This is a veto against justice. The presence of one of the survivors of Assad’s mass gassings in the chambers of the U.N. Security Council during the vote is a testimony to the Assad regime’s war crimes. Today’s veto, the fourth veto by Russia and China on a resolution on Syria in the last three years, gives the criminal regime and extremists in Syria a license to kill.”
The Syrian Coalition expresses its gratitude to France who initiated the resolution, and the other 12 Members of the UN Security Council, who supported the referral to the International Criminal Court, and calls on the International Community to take decisive actions to stop impunity in Syria.
May our wounded recover, our detainees be free, and our fallen heroes rest in peace.
Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.
