The Syrian Coalition expresses its sincere gratitude for the government of Canada for the support it provides for the Syrian refugees. It calls upon the Canadian government to redouble efforts aimed at bringing about a real political transition in Syria, where Bashar al-Assad has no role to play in the transitional period or in Syria’s future.
The Syrian Coalition calls for prioritizing support for the educational, medical and humanitarian aspects of the crisis in Syria; most importantly the delivery of humanitarian aid to besieged areas and the release of detainees.
The Coalition stresses the need for separating the political and humanitarian tracks. Improving the humanitarian conditions is not making pre-conditions and should not be subject to negotiations.
The Coalition emphasizes that the “cessation of hostilities” agreement reached between the United States and Russia would be meaningless unless it set the stage for a real political transition in Syria; a transition that ensures ending the Assad dictatorship and achieving the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom and dignity.
