Press Statement
Badr Jamous
Syrian Coalition Secretary General
May 11, 2014
After striking a deal supervised by the United Nations in Old Homs, whereby rebels and the remaining civilians in the area left to the towns of Addara al Kabira and Talbiseh in northern Homs, the regime launched, earlier today, ground-to-ground rockets on the two towns, which harbor thousands of displaced civilians. Regime forces also shelled the al Waer neighborhood.
Assad’s brutal practices and his constant reneging on agreements only shows he is not to be trusted and is set on collectively punishing innocent civilians for supporting the uprising. The United Nations, which has previously supervised a number of deals, needs to put pressure on the Assad regime, and indeed allow for the credible threat of force, because without such mechanisms, there is no end in sight for Assad’s brutality against civilian populations in Syria.
