According to today’s reports and images released from the city of Deirr el-Zour in Eastern Syria, the historic Dier el-Zour Suspension Bridge has collapsed, after Assad regime forces targeted it.
Although the loss of human life is the greatest sacrifice of all, Syria’s sacrifices are certainly not limited to loss of life; monuments, mosques, churches, and now this historic bridge have been destroyed in Assad’s attempt to crush the revolution. For over 86 years, this historic bridge has connected the two Euphrates banks, but due to Assad’s disregard not only for human life, but also for our national monuments, it now lays in ruins.
The Syrian Coalition strongly condemns the regime’s destructive policies, which have purposely targeted Syria’s heritage and civilization. We call on international organizations to uphold their duties and help protect what is left of Syria’s historical heritage.
As we reflect on the remains of this great bridge, we reflect on our destiny to face the most brutal of tyrants and to sacrifice the blood of our sons and daughters for freedom. We are committed to rebuild our great nation. Syrians are resilient and shall overcome these tragedies. As we build ourselves back up after this plight, we will rebuild the Dier el-Zour Bridge.
We ask for mercy for our martyrs, health for our wounded, and freedom for our prisoners.
Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.
