We welcome the UN Security Council resolution 2178, which aims to stop the flow of foreign terrorist fighters into Iraq and Syria. The resolution says the Council “stresses the urgent need to implement fully and immediately this resolution with respect to foreign terrorist fighters, underscores the particular and urgent need to implement this resolution with respect to those foreign terrorist fighters who are associated with ISIL, ANF and other cells, affiliates, splinter groups or derivatives of Al-Qaida.”
All foreign fighters operating on Syrian territory, including state sponsored Iraqi and Lebanese militias, must withdraw their forces immediately. We expect the governments of Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran to abide by the resolution and stop sending foreign fighters to join the fight alongside the regime in Syria. Equally, we call on the governments in the region to take all necessary measures to prevent those who intend to join ISIS and other Al-Qaida affiliate groups from reaching Syrian territory.
The Free Syrian Army (FSA) proved capable of defending the Syrian people against the tyranny of the regime and the brutality of ISIS. That is why we call on our partners to increase support to the FSA and accelerate the implementation of the train and equip program for the FSA to be able to to carry on the fight on the ground.
