The Syrian Coalition stresses the importance of the new strategy the United States laid out to confront Iran, calling for ensuring that all the requirements that were announced by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday are fully met. The United Sates called on Iran to withdraw its militias out of Syria and end its support for terrorism and its interference in the internal affairs of the countries of the region. The United States threatened the Iranian regime with the imposition of tough sanctions in response to its violations of human rights inside Iran and its continued repression of the Iranian people from all ethnicities and sects.
The Syrian Coalition calls on all countries of the world to take similar and serious positions and actions, stressing that Iran must not be rewarded for its support for terrorism. The Coalition also calls for confronting the Iranian project which is based on the fueling of conflicts and wars as it stresses the need to bring this disastrous chapter of Iran’s history and interventions in the region to an end.
The new US strategy should address the mistakes of the previous administrations and begin to confront Iran’s policies that are based on hostility to the peoples of the region and its attempts to create further chaos and export violence and terrorism. The new strategy should also address Iran’s overseeing of the implementation of ethnic and sectarian cleansing which serves its criminal, sectarian project in the region.
The Syrian Coalition stresses its outright rejection of any agreements that are reached at the expense of the blood of the peoples of the region as it has repeatedly warned of the Iranian threat. Specific measures need to be taken to address this threat, including the inclusion of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian-backed sectarian militias on the list of terrorist organizations. A UN Security Council needs also to be passed to condemn Iran’s occupation of Syria and its interference in the internal affairs of the countries of the region, ensure its militia are driven out of Syria, and refer its violations to the International Criminal Court.
The new US strategy and its threat of slamming new sanctions on Iran came in response to the behavior of the Iranian regime and its role in fueling crises in the region as well as its disruption of the efforts to reach political solutions to the problems in the region.
