Political career:
- Jawad Abu Hatab spoke up against the Assad regime’s crackdown on peaceful demonstrators and the arrest of doctors treating the protesters. He called on the Syrian Doctors Syndicate to take a clear stance on the regime’s crackdown.
- The first arrest warrant against him was issued by the Assad regime’s Political Security Branch on April 26, 2011, which prompted him to move to work in makeshift hospitals in eastern Ghouta. He also worked on developing ​​makeshift hospitals following the regime’s arrest of the wounded from public and private hospitals.
- In September 2012, he left Syria for Jordan, where he established the first specialized hospital in neighboring countries dedicated to treating the wounded coming from southern Syria.
- In September 2012, he participated in the founding conference of local councils in Syria which was held in Turkey with the aim of organizing the work of local councils; qualify them to manage the liberated areas; and establish state institutions to act as alternatives to the regime’s institutions.
- He is a co-founder of the Syrian Opposition Coalition which was established in November 2012.
- In 2013, he participated in a workshop in Gaziantep to approve Law 107.
- He took part in eight conferences held to formulate statutes and unify the work of local councils.
- In 2014, he participated in establishing the Supreme Council of Local Councils and in laying out bylaws for the Ministry of Local Administration.
- In 2014, he left Jordan and settled in Turkmen Mount where he worked in makeshift hospitals. He also established Barnas Nursing Institute.
- He was a member of the committee that established the University of Aleppo in the liberated areas.
- He took part in establishing the Medical Specializations Commission in 2015 to enable doctors to complete their majors and provide hospitals in the liberated areas with medical personnel.
- He established the Medical College in the town of Kafar Takharim in northern Idlib in 2015. He held the position of a dean and a lecturer at the College of Human Medicine. In 2018, the College was moved to the town of Marea in northern Syria due to regime’s constant bombardment and harassment by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
- He was appointed head of the Syrian Interim Government in 2016.
- He took part in the establishment of the Syrian National Army in December 2017.
- In January 2019, he resigned as SIG’s head and returned to academic work as a lecturer and dean of the Faculty of Human Medicine at the Free Aleppo University in northern Syria.
