Syrian Coalition: Forced Deal in Dara’a Amounts to War Crime

The Syrian Coalition stressed that the imposition of deal on the people of Dara’a under the force of arms, bombardment, and mass killings is a war crime and a crime against humanity. It held the international community full responsibility in view of its silence about the ongoing gross violations and its failure to implement international resolutions on Syria.

At a press conference held on Saturday, Syrian Coalition Spokesman Anas al-Abdah said that all parties that played a role in the deal that was forced on the people of Dara’a bear full legal, political and ethical responsibility, including for the mass forced displacement of the people, killings against civilians, and the destruction of infrastructure.

Abdah said that the Syrian Coalition “supported the resoluteness of our people in Dara’a in the face of the brutal assault,” adding that the Coalition had extensive contacts with all regional and international actors in this regard.

“The Coalition expresses its disappointment at the failure of the UN Security Council to condemn the crimes of genocide and mass forced displacement in Dara’a province,” Abdah said.

“It also expresses its disappointment at the failure of the Council’s permanent members to assume their responsibilities in this regard, including the United States, which was a guarantor state but which later renounced its commitments and left the Syrian people and easy prey for the Russian-Iranian brutal onslaught.”

Abdah went on: “The onslaught on Dara’a followed a similar one on eastern Ghouta and was accompanied by threats to launch a fresh assault against Idlib province. These actions are clearly aimed at undermining the political process which is now lacking the minimum credibility in the eyes of the majority of the Syrian people. This onslaught has also exposed the inability of the United Nations to protect millions of civilians who have been displaced and who are still being subjected to continued shelling.”

Moreover, Abdah said that the Syrian revolution “was born out of decades-long suffering and out of the Syrians’ free will. The Syrian revolution will continue despite the challenges and difficulties.”

“A political solution that is based on the UN Security Council resolutions and under the auspices of the United Nations is the only way to achieve political transition in Syria. All international efforts must be based on that fact, away from attempts by certain parties to impose their own agendas.” (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
