‘On 22 July, the Syrian Coalition delivered a letter to the current president of the UN Security Council, highlighting the urgency to take action to save the lives of civilians in Zabadani, in the Qalamoun region near the border with Lebanon, as Assad’s forces and Hezbollah militias intensified their attacks against the civilian population in the area. The letter urges the UN Security Council to condemn Iranian aggression in Syria.
The letter outlines the need for decisive steps the Security Council needs to take to address the the threat from Iranian-sponsored Hezbollah militias and to protect Syrians from Assad’s indiscriminate violence and Hezbollah barbarity, including by adopting the following measures:
- Condemn the atrocities perpetrated by Hezbollah inside Syria, and demand Hezbollah withdraw from Syrian territory;
- Ensure utmost vigilance in the monitoring of the Iranian nuclear deal and Security Council resolution 2231 (2015), which, when implemented, will potentially release billions of dollars to the Iranian regime, which the Security Council must ensure is not used to fuel and arm the Syrian regime’s killing machine;
- Stop the Syrian regime’s indiscriminate aerial bombardment of Syria, which is responsible for more than 60 percent of all civilian deaths in Syria and the vast majority of deaths in Zabadani by authorizing a safe zone.
