Syrian Coalition: Assad’s Importing of External Militias a Sign of Weakness

Buttom Knives ENora Al Ameer, vice president of the Syrian Coalition, said that Assad’s importing of Iraqi and Hezbollah militias to fight in the battle of Yabroud is a proof of the depletion of his troops. “Assad’s use of the terrorist militias of Hezbollah since the early days of the uprising was a sign of his army’s disintegration. HRW: Russia and China Deliberately Block Security Council Efforts to Protect Syrians
Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused Russia and China of neutralizing the UN Security Council through blocking any steps that may put an end to the atrocities committed by the Assad regime in Syria. HRW stresses that the Assad regime’s targeting of civilians has led to atrocities witnessed in 2013, However, the world leaders have not yet taken any steps to end the atrocities and hold the perpetrators accountable. Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch said that “despite the rapid increase in the death toll and horrific abuses, Russia and China are still neutralizing the UN Security Council and thus have enabled regime forces to kill more civilians in Syria. The latest deadlock of Geneva II talks should not be seen as justifications to avoid taking the necessary measures to protect the Syrian civilians. Real pressure is needed to stop the killings and allow the delivery of lifesaving humanitarian aid.” Roth also said that “the past year saw some of the worst atrocities in Syria and other countries, with the intensification of repression in many other countries. But we have seen people around the world rising up against the repressive regimes, what gives us hope that the suppression of human rights will have consequences on the perpetrators.” (Source: Human Rights Watch + Syrian Coalition)

Spanish Journalist Freed From ISIS Captivity
Reporters without Borders said that they are “immensely relieved to learn that Marc Marginedas, a veteran war reporter for the Barcelona-based El Periódico newspaper, was released yesterday in Syria after six months in captivity and is now back in Spain, where he has been reunited with his family. “”We are delighted by Marginedas’ release and we hope that all the other journalists – both foreign and Syrian – currently held by rebels or the government in Syria will also soon be freed,” said Lucie Morillon, head of research at Reporters without Borders. “We urge all parties to the conflict to free not only all the news providers but also the peaceful human rights activists they are holding.” According to El Periódico, Marginedas entered Syria across the land border with Turkey on 1 September with the aim of covering the regime’s preparations for a response to a possible western military intervention in Syria, and to investigate the use of chemical weapons against civilians in a Damascus suburb on 21 August. He was kidnapped on 4 September with his driver near the city of Hama by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). ISIS is believed to be holding other news providers including two Spanish journalists – Javier Espinosa and Ricard Garcia Vilanova – and four French ones – Français Didier François, Edouard Elias, Nicolas Hénin and Pierre Torrès. A total of 17 foreign journalists and more 20 Syrian news providers are currently being held hostages or are missing, while around 40 Syrian professional journalists and citizen-journalists are being held by the Assad regime.
