Vice-President Hisham Marwa stressed that “the position of the Syrian Coalition and the Syrian opposition in general on a political solution has become clear, and things now depend on whether the UN envoy Staffan de Mistura can convince the UN Security Council of the need to enforce the Geneva Communique with all its provisions.”
Marwa described the remarks made by Assad Foreign Minister’s, who said fighting terrorism must be top priority, “reflects the lack of seriousness in engaging in a political solution and a wasting of time.”
Marwa stresses that “the lack of pressure on the Assad regime emboldened it to commit more massacres against the Syrian people, thus continuing the cycle of violence in Syria.”
He also reaffirms the Syrian Coalition’s commitment to the implementation of the Geneva Communique and to the issue of the fight against terrorism.
With regard to de Mistura’s moves, Marwa told the Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper “that de Mistura is obviously trying to revive the Geneva conference by offering new ideas after his trip to Cairo, Tehran and Beirut. He said in Cairo “the bloodbath in Syria must come to an end,” and also spoke about hearing important and balanced ideas from the opposition. He has already announced he was surprised that 90% of the opposition attitudes submitted to him were identical, as all they agree that the provisions contained in the Geneva Communique are red line and cannot be waived.”
