Kurdish National Council Condemns PYD Attack on Ma’abdah (Karkiliki) Local Council in Alhasaka Province

The Kurdish National Council (KNC) condemned the terrorist attack carried out by militants of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) on the local council of the town of Ma’abada (or Karkiliki) in Alhasaka province.

PYD militants on Monday detonated an IED in front of the office of the local council, causing material damage to the office building.

The KNC said that the attack represents an act of revenge against the KNC’s national project, and came as response to the KNC’s participation in the Geneva negotiations alongside the Syrian opposition. It also said that the attack aims to undermine Syria’s national unity.
Ma’abada local council was previously targeted by several similar attacks that the KNC described as designed not only to undermine the free will of the people of Ma’abada and Rmeilan but also to scare the people away from embracing the KNC’s national project.

The KNC pointed out that Ma’abada local council, just like all other KNC-affiliated bodies in Alhasaka province, has expressed the voices of the people who yearn for freedom and who joined the revolution against Assad’s’ rule since the beginning. The council also called for the realization of the legitimate national rights of Syria’s Kurds in accordance with international norms and laws, the KNC added.

The KNC went on to say that the KNC-affiliated bodies in Alhasaka province have firmly adhered to their national project despite all the hardships and pressure put on them.

On January 24, 2014, the office of Ma’abada local council was burned down as the Geneva II conference kicked off. On May 5, 2014, the logo of the council was torn apart by gunmen believed to be belonging to the PYD, while the office of the council was set on fire on April 24, 2016 in response to the KNC’s participation of the latest Geneva negotiations as part of the opposition’s High Negotiations Committee. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
