President of the Syrian Coalition Anas Alabdah called on France, the United States and Great Britain, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, to call an emergency meeting of the Council to address the dangerous deteriorating situation on the ground in Syria; in particular the situation in Aleppo and Daraya.
In letters sent to the foreign ministers of those countries, President Alabdah called for the UN Security Council to assume its responsibility towards the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Syria. Alabdah said that Russia, a permanent member of the Council, is complicit in the latest military escalation by the Assad regime.
Alabdah pointed out that the recent military escalation in Syria indicates the Assad regime is increasingly emboldened to carry on with his crimes because of Russian support as well as the international silence on the regime’s crimes.
The Coalition president said the Assad regime’s crimes represent a violation of international law and the UN Security Council resolutions, particularly resolutions 2118, 2254, 2139, 2268, and 2165. Alabdah stressed that allowing these violations and crimes to continue with impunity will cast serious doubt on the role of the UN Security Council in reaching a political solution in Syria.
