Food prices in the liberated parts of Aleppo have skyrocketed after pro-regime forces and allied militias cut off the Castello Road, the last route in and out of the city’s east.
According to Smart News Network, prices of basic food items have risen to unprecedented levels since July 9th. For example, the price of a pack of baby formula rose from 3,700 Syrian pounds to 8,000, while the price of one kilogram of potato more than tripled to reach 500 Syrian pounds.
The closure of the Castello Road by regime forces have also caused many items of staple food to disappear from the markets of eastern Aleppo, most notably, vegetables and fruit as they were usually brought it from northern rural Aleppo.
Aleppo provincial council on July 13 issued a directive preventing monopoly on food and fuel items by traders in the liberated districts of Aleppo. The directive also prevents the stashing or storing of basic materials threatening to take punitive measures against those who violate the directive, head of the council Zakaria Aminu said.
President of the Syrian Coalition Anas Alabdah earlier called on friends of the Syrian people to give up making appeals and act in line with their political, legal and moral responsibilities by taking action to deter the crimes of the Assad regime. He also called for severing all ties with the regime and warned against normalizing relations with the regime under any circumstances and at any level.
“Silence by our brothers and friends is no longer acceptable, nor does the offering of mere condolences,” Alabdah said at a press conference held in Istanbul on July 12. (Source: Syrian Coalition + Smart News Network)
