Qadamani: Rebel Gains in Aleppo Bolster the Opposition’s Negotiating Position

Member of the opposition’s delegation to the Geneva negotiations Basma Qadamani said that gains made by rebel and FSA groups in Aleppo including breaking the siege on the city’s eastern parts give the opposition a stronger position in any future round of negotiations in Geneva.

Qadamani said that before the siege on Aleppo was broken, the Russians had thought that they could force the opposition to agree on the formation of a so-called national unity government with Assad in future negotiations. The answer came from the rebel and FSA fighters who made it clear they would not allow Russia and the Assad regime to suffocate a whole city in order to dictate the terms of a political solution, Qadamani added.

The opposition’s High Negotiations Committee (HNC) suspended its participation in the Geneva negotiations about three months ago due to the Assad regime’s refusal to implement the UN Security Council resolutions on Syria; most importantly those related to lifting the sieges, allowing the delivery of humanitarian aid, releasing detainees, and abiding by the cessation of hostilities agreement.

Qadamani noted that the blockade the Assad regime imposed on eastern Aleppo with the help of Russia has not been met by any response from the international community, adding that the whole world stood by as regime forces were encircling the city.

Russia’s proposal to open so-called “humanitarian corridors” was aimed to force residents of the eastern part of Aleppo to leave their homes, Qadamani said, adding that the Russian proposal was basically designed to force civilians to make a choice between leave their city or getting bombed.

In one of the most important developments of the battle for Aleppo, rebel and FSA groups managed to break the siege regime forces imposed on eastern Aleppo over a month ago. A week after launching the “Great Battle of Aleppo,” rebel and FSA fighters took control of a number of big regime positions in southern Aleppo, most notably the Artillery College, Alramousah, and Project 1070 area, effectively opening a new supply route for nearly 350,000 civilians living in eastern Aleppo.

Activists said that markets in eastern Aleppo are once again bustling with shoppers after rebel and FSA groups introduced convoys of commodities, especially vegetables and fruits, to the liberated parts of the city for the first time in a month. (Source: Syrian Coalition + Reuters)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
