SOC Calls for Arab League Emergency Meeting on PYD’s Threat to Syria’s Unity

The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) called on the Arab League to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the serious threats the PYD militia poses to the integrity of the Syrian territory.

This came in a letter sent by SOC’s President, Nasr Al-Hariri, to the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, on the PYD militia’s crimes against the Syrian people, especially the mass forced displacement and demographic change.

Al-Hariri said that the suffering of Syrian civilians in Deir Ezzor, Raqqa and Hasakah provinces is being compounded by the recent acceleration of events, adding that the PYD militia, an offshoot of the PKK terrorist group, is trying to carve out a state in the region by the force of arms.

He pointed out that this militia is pursuing racist policies by imposing ideology-based educational curricula that incite hatred and trying to drive a wedge between future generations and their Arab and Islamic history. The actions of the PYD militia are also threatening the unity of Syria and the values of its people, Al- Hariri said, stressing that many households chose to leave the country than send their children to the PYD-run schools.

He added that the PYD militia is seeking to seize civilians’ property by issuing the so-called Law No. 7, stressing that even though the law was put on hold, its issuance has exposed the PYD’s plans to copy the so-called laws by which the Israeli occupation seized the Arabs’ property in Palestine.

Moreover, Al-Hariri said that the PYD militia is seizing the region’s assets and using the money to buy property for the benefit of its leadership in the Qandil Mountains with the aim of changing the economic and social balance in Syria.

The PYD militia is also exploiting the dire living conditions in eastern Syria in conjunction with the deliberate burning of crops for two consecutive years, and preventing farmers from selling their crops in other areas. He said that these policies aim to impoverish the people, humiliate, and recruit or displace them.

Furthermore, Al-Hariri talked about arrests, brutal torture and enforced disappearances, and other repressive acts by the PYD militia against the protesters against its policies. He also talked about forcible recruitment campaigns, noting that there is evidence that this militia is involved in terrorist operations involving the systematic use of explosions in the liberated areas in northwestern Syria.

Based on the Arab League Resolution No. 7572 of 2012 recognizing the SOC as the legitimate representative of the aspirations of the Syrian people and the main interlocutor with the Arab League, and based on its Resolution No. 7595 of 2013 giving the SOC Syria’s seat in the Arab League, Al-Hariri called for an emergency meeting of the Arab League to discuss the issue and address its negative effects. It also called for inviting the SOC to attend the meeting to brief the League about the details and circumstances of the case.

Al-Hariri stressed the need for the Arab League to sever all ties with the PYD militia as posing a serious threat to Arab national security, demanding the issuance of an urgent statement by the Secretary-General expressing solidarity with the SOC’s demands and condemning the practices of the PYD militia. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
