SOC Meets Independent Christian Personalities as Part of Meetings by National Dialogue Committee

The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) held a consultative meeting with independent Christian personalities as part of the series of meetings that the National Dialogue Committee has been conducting to discuss the latest political developments and the major challenges facing the Syrian revolution. The meeting came as part of preparations for an inclusive national dialogue process.

The meeting brought together SOC’s President Nasr Al-Hariri, Head of the Syrian Interim Government (SIG), Abdurrahman Mustafa, Vice-President Oqab Yahya, Coordinator of the National Dialogue Committee, Salem al-Meslet, Secretary of the political committee, Riyad al-Hassan, member of the political committee, Bahjat Atassi, members of the General Assembly Abd al-Ilah Fahd, Ahmed Tomeh, and Muhammad Kaddah.

Al-Hariri talked about the situation on the ground and the Assad regime’s attempts to sabotage the ceasefire agreement by making up excuses, adding that the regime still insists on pursuing a bloody military solution.

Al-Hariri gave an overview on the results of the work of the Constitutional Committee, pointing out that the Assad regime still refuses to discuss the substance of the constitutional process. On the contrary, the delegation of the Syrian Negotiations Commission presented many proposals for the constitution focusing on separation of the legislative, executive, and judicial powers.

Moreover, Al-Hariri pointed to the PYD militia’s violations east of the Euphrates River and the gravity of its plans on the unity of the Syrian people and the integrity of Syrian territory. He also talked about the renewed anti-regime protests in Kanakir and Al-Suwayda demanding the release of detainees and the withdrawal of Iranian-backed militias from Syria.

For his part, Mustafa gave an overview on SIG’s work and its role in improving security and stability in the liberated areas and establishing good governance. He also talked about the health conditions in the liberated areas and SIG’s efforts to stem the coronavirus.

Yahya gave an overview on the key elements of the national political vision that the SOC is preparing to announce and the national discourse encompassing all components of the Syrian society.

The Christian personalities put forward a set of suggestions for improving the SOC’s performance and utilizing the Syrian capabilities abroad as they stressed the importance of holding further meetings according to a clear program to ensure true participation.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition.
