President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Anas Abdah, gave a briefing to the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) General Assembly on the developments in the political process and the work of the Constitutional Committee.
Abdah reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to the implementation of international resolutions, most importantly the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council resolution 2254, in addition to reaching a genuine political transition that fulfills the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, dignity and democracy.
Abdah pointed out that the Commission is seeking to open all tracks of the political process in parallel with the work of the Constitutional Committee, the slow progress of which risks threatening the political process in its entirety.
Abdah stressed that the UN and its Syria team are required to have a new, effective plan of action so that the political process does not reach a dead end as was the case with the team of former UN envoy Staffan de Mistura.
Moreover, Abdah said that the upcoming round of talks by the Constitutional Committee is a pivotal and important one as it will discuss the constitutional provisions.
Abdah also stressed that the Commission still considers the issue of detainees a priority as it continues to raise the issue in all its meetings and activities. He also stressed the need to release detainees and disclose the fate of the forcibly disappeared, maintaining that this issue must not be subjected to negotiations. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
