President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, visited Sheikh Osama Al-Rifai to congratulate him on his election as Syria’s new Grand Mufti having gained the confidence of Syrian scholars and the Syrian people.
Al-Meslet stressed that Al-Rifai is a prominent Islamic scholar who has well-known stances against injustice and tyranny, adding: “Everyone remembers that Al-Rifai was the first to openly express the demands of the revolution on his pulpit in Damascus in the first week of the revolution.”
Al-Meslet stressed that the election of Al-Rifai as Syria’s Grand Mufti has restored to this post its legitimacy, weight, importance and effectiveness, which were all undermined after the Assad regime seized power in Syria.
Al-Meslet wished Al-Rifai success in assuming his responsibilities as he expected that the Syrian Islamic Council will carry on with its mission of unifying the word of Syrian scholars, finding legitimate solutions to Syrians’ problems and issues, defending moderate and tolerant Islam, and standing against extremism and terrorism in all its forms.
