The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) Vice-President, Ruba Habboush, said that the Assad regime is committing the most heinous crimes against the Syrian people, especially women, adding that Syrian women have been victims of the brutality of the Assad regime for over fifty years. She indicated that the world’s continued inaction a towards these crimes and its failure to hold the regime accountable has turned the country into the one of the worst places for women’s rights.
Habboush stressed that eliminating violence against women in Syria is contingent on getting rid of the Assad regime which detains and abuses women in order to put pressure on their families, adding that the Assad regime is committing systematic violence against women.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that at least 16,104 women have been killed in Syria since 2011, mostly at the hands of the Assad regime.
In a new report issued on the occasion of International Women’s Day, the local monitoring group indicated that the Assad regime is responsible for the death of 11,923 women, while 969 others were killed in attacks by the Russian forces. The death toll also included 587 women who were killed by the ISIS terrorist group and 161 others who were killed by the PYD militia.
The report indicated that at least 9,264 women are still detained or missing in Syria, of whom 8,029 were detained by the Assad regime.
