The Syrian Opposition Coalition’s (SOC) political committee held a regular meeting under the chairmanship of President Salem Al-Meslet. In attendance were also President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission Anas Abdah, SOC’s Vice-president, and members of the political committee. They discussed the latest field and political developments, regional and international developments and their impact on Syria.
Al-Meslet gave an overview on the SOC’s weekly activities, especially the recent visit to the liberated areas, the participation in the celebrations of the eleventh anniversary of the start of the Syrian revolution, and the meetings with civil and military bodies. He stressed that everyone is still hopeful to achieve the aspirations of the Syrian revolution for freedom, dignity and democracy.
Participants discussed the course of the seventh session of the Constitutional Committee currently being established in Geneva. The political committee follows through the results of the session on a daily basis through virtual meetings with the SOC’s representatives in the Constitutional Committee.
For his part, Abdah reiterated the Commission’s rejection of the “step for step” proposal of the UN envoy, Geir Pedersen, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to UN resolution 2254 and the refusal to reduce the political process to the drafting of a constitution.
Participants discussed the developments of the Russian aggression against Ukraine as they reiterated the SOC’s condemnation of the attack and its solidarity with the Ukrainian people against the Russian killing machine that is committing the same crimes that it has been committing in Syria.
Tabled for discussion was also the situation of Syrian refugees in Turkey as the participants stressed the importance of cooperating with the Turkish authorities in order to swiftly address the emerging problems facing Syrian refugees with regard to updating their residence addresses and the subsequent invalidation of the temporary protection identity cards for a large number of them.
