President of the Syrian Coalition Riad Seif on Tuesday met with the UK Special Representative for Syria Martin Longden and discussed with him the latest political and field developments, especially the situation in the provinces of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor.
The meeting was attended by the Coalition’s vice-presidents and members of the political committee. This is the first meeting with Longden who has recently succeeded Gareth Bayley as the UK envoy to Syria.
The two sides discussed the developments of the political process and the Riyadh opposition conference due to be held later this month. They stressed need to activate and revive the political process in order to reach a just political solution in accordance with international resolutions, most importantly the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council resolution 2254.
The two sides also emphasized continued coordination in order to achieve the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom and dignity through supporting their demands for the establishment of a pluralistic democratic state without Bashar al-Assad and his regime.
Seif stressed the important role of the United Kingdom in pushing the political process forward as he underscored that any solution cannot be achieved as long as Assad and his clique survive in power.
For his part, the British envoy reaffirmed his country’s continued support for the Syrian opposition at the international level and for the rights of the Syrian people.
