Al-Bahra: We are Negotiating with Int’l Community, not Assad Regime Which Seeks to Kill Political Process

President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Salem Al-Meslet, sent a legal memorandum to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President of the UN General Assembly Abdullah Shahid, and President of the UN Security Council for the current session Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations regarding the Tadamon Massacre whose details were revealed by the Guardian newspaper.

Al-Meslet stressed that this massacre is not the only one, as Syrians have suffered from thousands of similar crimes at the hands of the Assad regime. He said that many of these crimes are still hidden and their perpetrators are still at large.

Al-Meslet said that the Assad regime is seeking to obliterate the evidence and whitewash its image in front of the world. He said that many international investigation commissions confirmed that the regime has not committed to implementing UN resolutions and continued its systematic human rights violations, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Moreover, Al-Meslet pointed out that Russia continues to support the Assad regime in the UN Security Council and on the ground in committing atrocities against civilians. He pointed to the continuation of Russian attacks in Syria and their simultaneity with similar attacks in Ukraine, which makes it imperative for the international community to take concrete action order to fulfill its obligations and duties to protect international peace and security in accordance with Article 1 of the UN Charter.

Al-Meslet called for an emergency session of the UN General Assembly to discuss the steps that must be taken to hold the Assad regime accountable, delegitimize it, and refer it to the International Criminal Court in light of the new evidence published by the Guardian newspaper and the Assad regime’s continued actions in exterminating the Syrian people.

He also called for the preparation of a draft resolution by the UN General Assembly, in accordance with the Uniting for Peace principle, calling on the Assad regime and Russia to immediately stop their military activities against the Syrian people, in light of the UN General Assembly’s resolution against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He stressed the need for urgent support for all efforts to achieve a peaceful political transition in Syria through the full implementation of the Geneva Communique of 2012 and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, especially Resolutions 2118 and 2254 as well as the UN General Assembly resolutions, including resolution 67/262.
