The French Special Envoy for Syria, Ambassador Brigitte Cormi, has extended her heartfelt condolences to Salem Al-Meslet, the President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), in light of the tragic death of numerous Syrian asylum seekers who perished in a boat sinking off the Greek coast a few days ago.
In a letter addressed to the SOC’s President, Ambassador Cormi reaffirmed her country’s unwavering commitment to pursuing a political resolution in Syria. She emphasized the importance of enabling Syrians to lead dignified lives and attain the prosperous future they deserve. This stance was previously demonstrated by France during the recent Brussels donors’ conference.
The SOC, through a press release, reiterated that the responsibility for the ongoing migration crisis and the influx of asylum seekers rests solely with the Assad regime. The SOC highlighted the regime’s repressive practices, continuous human rights violations against the Syrian people, and the persistent detention and torture in its prisons.
Furthermore, the SOC emphasized that the perils faced by Syrian individuals seeking asylum vividly illustrate the impossibility of living under the rule of the Assad regime. The regime, along with its loyal sectarian militias, has embraced repression and criminality as its modus operandi. This reality unequivocally refutes the regime’s claims regarding the safety of areas under its control.
