During its regular meeting on Thursday, the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) issued a decision to establish a neutral and independent legal committee from outside the SOC to investigate and ascertain the facts.
The decision outlined the committee’s responsibilities, which include investigating allegations made by Nasr Hariri, a member of the SOC’s General Assembly. Hariri claimed that Abdurrahman Mustafa, the Head of the Syrian Interim Government, had made offensive verbal threats to SOC members in an attempt to coerce them into voting for a specific candidate. The committee’s task is to determine the validity of these allegations.
The committee is composed of Judge Abdul Hamid Al-Hamada as chairman, with Dr. Ismail Al-Khalfan and lawyer Muhammad Saleh Al-Najm as members.
The decision also established a timeline for the committee’s work, setting it at ten days from the date it commences its mission, with the possibility of a single extension of a similar duration upon the request of the committee, approved by the SOC’s President. The committee’s mission concludes upon the submission of its report.
The decision granted the committee all necessary powers to carry out its mission, as outlined in Article Two of the decision. This includes the authority to question SOC members, regardless of their position or capacity, as well as leaders of affiliated institutions. The committee can also hear statements from whomever it deems necessary and take any actions it deems appropriate to fulfill its investigation duties. All actions and findings will be documented in the official records kept in the investigation file.
The decision called for full compliance and cooperation from all SOC members, its leadership, and employees, as well as the leadership and employees of its affiliated institutions, without interference in the committee’s work or attempts to influence the investigation process.
It was emphasized that the political committee would take appropriate action against anyone who breaches the obligations outlined in this article.
Furthermore, the decision underscored the immediate publication of the committee’s report upon its issuance, along with the measures that the SOC will take based on the committee’s findings. This information will be shared on the official SOC accounts to ensure transparency and inform the Syrian people.
