The Syrian Negotiations Commission emphasized in its closing statement that, despite the efforts of the international envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, to facilitate progress, there has been a notable absence of positive outcomes. This is particularly evident in the unresolved issues surrounding detainees, ongoing violations against civilians in Syria, and the Assad regime’s relentless bombing campaign in Idlib.
The Commission issued a call to action directed at the UN Secretary-General, the Special Envoy to Syria, and members of the UN Security Council. The plea urges them to acknowledge their responsibilities regarding the tragic plight of the Syrian people and to take decisive steps to implement UN Resolution 2254.
In their statement, the Commission urged the United Nations, relevant organizations, and member states to fulfill their obligations towards the rights of refugees and displaced persons. It emphasized the importance of protecting these individuals, meeting their needs, and initiating mechanisms to achieve justice and accountability for the ongoing crimes against humanity in Syria. The Commission urged compliance with UN General Assembly resolutions to overcome hindrances in the Security Council.
Additionally, the Commission called for a special session of the UN Security Council to address obstacles impeding the political process and explore solutions in collaboration with the Commission.
The statement from the Commission also included condemnation of the Israeli occupation forces’ invasion of the Gaza Strip and the atrocities committed against innocent civilians. The Commission expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and emphasized the urgent need to end their suffering.
The Syrian Negotiations Commission concluded its regular meeting in Geneva last Saturday after a two-day session. The meeting covered discussions on the political situation, briefings from committees on the political process, including the Constitutional Committee, and an evaluation of the overall political process’s progress in light of regional and international circumstances.
