President Mustafa: Int’l Community’s Shirking of its Responsibilities Encourages Assad Regime to Commit More Massacres

President of the Syrian Coalition, Abdurrahman Mustafa, said that the massacre the Assad regime committed in the town of Jarjanaz in rural Idlib on Friday was a clear message to the international community that the regime will continue to show utter disregard for all treaties and agreements aimed at ensuring safety and security of civilians.

Mustafa stressed that the silence of the international community and the UN Security Council’s shirking of its responsibilities means the continuation of such horrible crimes.

Activists in rural Idlib said that 10 civilians, including two children, were killed and dozens more wounded in the town of Jarjanaz on Friday when regime forces stationed in the town of Ejaz in southern rural Idlib hit the town with over 20 heavy artillery shells.

Activists said the shelling hit a mosque during the Friday prayers while people were inside.

In a press release issued on Friday, the Syrian Coalition stressed that Russia bears primary responsibility for the repeated violations by the Assad regime forces and their allied Iranian militias in the areas covered by the Idlib agreement.

The Coalition condemned the criminal shelling of rural Idlib as a blatant violation of the UN Security Council resolutions, international law and the Geneva Convention which prevents the targeting of civilians

The Coalition called on Russia to shoulder its responsibility with regards to this crime and the repeated violations of the agreement through the constant artillery shelling carried out by the regime forces and the Iranian militias on rural Idlib and rural Hama.

The Coalition emphasized its continued efforts to turn this agreement into an opportunity to revive the political process leading to a comprehensive political transition. It noted that Iran is seeking to undermine this process.

Meanwhile, activists in rural Idlib and Hama said that the Assad forces on Friday fired dozens of artillery shells on the villages and towns of Tamana’a, Skeik, Alteeh, Um Jalal, Alfurija in southern rural Idlib as well as the periphery of the Turkish observation post in the town of Sarman. The shelling also targeted the towns of Latamina, Morek, Maarakubah, Bwaida, and the outskirts of the town of Atshan and Al-Jubaisat in northern rural Hama. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
