Assad regime forces continue to commit war crimes in Idlib province as renewed shelling and attacks on civilian areas in the ‘de-escalation zone’ in northwestern Syria killed a civilian and wounded three others on Sunday.
According to the Syrian Civil Defense, a civilian was killed and three others injured, including a woman, when regime forces fired no fewer than 15 artillery shells on the village of Kafar Awaid.
The Syrian Civil Defense added that regime forces also fired a barrage of around 178 artillery shells on the villages of Kafr Awaid, Ma’ret Harmah, Al-Tah, Has, Tarmala, Sheikh Mustafa, and Umm Al-Seer.
The Assad regime has received further support from its backers, with Russia and China vetoing a UN Security Council resolution calling for a truce in Idlib and protection for civilians.
The Syrian National Coalition said that Russia and China’s vetoing of the draft UN Security Council resolution that was proposed by Belgium, Kuwaiti and Germany calling for a ceasefire and the protection of civilians in Idlib represents continuation of the Russian-Chinese covering of the Assad regime’s war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The Coalition called on the major actors to shoulder their responsibilities by working collectively to establish an international mechanism that is capable of putting an end to the killings and crimes against the Syrian people and create the suitable conditions for a political solution in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2254.
