The delegation of the Syrian Negotiations Commission to New York held several important meetings on the sidelines of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly. The meetings were focused on the importance of stopping the Assad regime and its backers’ onslaught on civilians across Syria, especially in Idlib province as well as on the announcement of the formation of the Constitutional Committee.
Member of the Commission Bader Jamous said that the delegation met the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, the US special envoy to Syria, James Jeffrey, and Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir.
Jamous, who is also member of the Syrian National Coalition’s political committee, pointed out that the delegation expressed its doubts about the willingness of the Assad regime and its bckers to stop attacks on civilians and civilian targets under the pretext of fighting terrorism. He stressed that the regime will seek to impede the political process which it was forced to engage in as it is still determined on pursuing a military solution.
For his part, Pedersen expressed optimism about revitalizing the political process in Syria which has long been stalled, adding that the first step in the political process has begun.
Jeffrey stressed that his country will push towards bringing about a political transition in Syria that guarantees the return of refugees and restores stability as well as security for the Syrian people. He reaffirmed his country’s continued support for the Syrian Negotiations Commission and the political process.
Meanwhile, Al-Jubeir said that the Constitutional Committee will provide a gateway to the political process, adding that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will continue to support the Commission and the Syrian people in their quest for a political transition.
